The PSP is the gaming console for yuppies. That said, it does a great job at filling that role.
The Good:
The screen is fuck-all wonderful; gigantic, bright, high resolution. The buttons are pretty easy to use, the analog stick is a bit fidgety but you get used to it. Graphics are just about PS2 quality. The speaker works (seriously, who uses this?). You can look at photos, watch movies, or play mp3s off the memory stick, as advertised.
The Bad:
I have a dead pixel dead center. This seems to be a common flaw, but I don't notice it while gaming, so I'm not too upset. UMD is a disc in a sleeve, a la minidsic, except there is no spring-loaded door, which makes the whole thing basically pointless. Don't expect to be able to carry loose games around. There's no screen protection, just like the original GBA, so expect scratches to cause worse problems due to the sharper screen. Reasonable battery expectation is about 4 hours. Since it's Sony not only does it require memory stick duo, one of the most expensive flash formats, but some 3rd party brands don't fit in the slot, so you have to roll the dice or buy a Sony-branded stick. Enjoy paying double.
The value pack had some value, with the headphones sounding ok and the sleeve being a must to protect the screen until something else comes along. Free 32mb memory stick saves games until I get a larger one.
Sony and Nintendo are targeting different markets. The PSP is great for casual gaming during commutes and breaks, but is not rugged enough to toss in a backpack nor supplied with enough battery to play all day long. The major strong points here are the better graphics and the ability for media playback via a giant honking memory stick. I think of it as the recreational equivalent of a salaryman's laptop. |
