Let me try again. Evolution is propelled by environmental pressures and mutations in genetic structure. If the environmental pressures are strong enough, creatures with beneficial mutations will be more likely to successfully bear offspring who survive themselves to breeding age. Should a species NOT develop a beneficial mutation in the face of significant environmental pressures, it goes extinct.
Therefore, most species surviving today not only have mutations from random DNA transcription errors, they also have several mechanisms in place to cause DNA alterations. The most obvious of these mechanisms is sexual reproduction, in which your offspring have a mixture of DNA from both parents. The more mates you combine your DNA with, the more genetic diversity among your offspring, the more likely one of them will have a beneficial mutation that allows them to survive should an environmental pressure come along that proves fatal to you and your current genetic makeup.
Otherwise what is the point of sex? It's like having a full house (you're fit enough to breed) and sending back half the cards in hopes of getting a flush.

I don't have a link. This isn't something I picked up off wikipedia. It's something I learned in my bacteriology lecture from Professor Diana Downs. I paid my tuition, go look it up yourself, lazyass!
Let me explain a little more. You might be aware that girls have this thing called pregnancy, where they spend some amount of time growing a new individual. Other animals, the girl lays eggs and watches over them and feeds the wee bastards when they hatch, until they're ready to leave. Males, generally, can fuck and leave. In monogamous species, the male stays and is invested also. But in some of these monogamous species, cheating still happens. It makes sense for the male, he has sex and leaves and no consequences at all. Maybe he even gets another male to raise his kids. Good work, high five. For the female, it's not clear at all how this helps. She has way more riding on this, and was super picky in the first place about selecting a mate (probably). How did that guy just convince her to have sex on the sly?
Yes, yes, perfesser, but you're not taking this "selfish gene" concept far enough. Beyond proper sexual functioning, not only do your genes not give a shit about others, they don't give a shit about YOU. They don't care if you're capable of putting your instincts at peace with one another any more than viral DNA cares about the happiness of its protein capsid. If you have two mutually exclusive desires, and both are adaptive genetic traits, your DNA couldn't give two shits over the fact that having them would nonetheless make its vector conflicted and unhappy with itself.
SO if both the urge for monogamy helps in your genetic survival as well as the desire for diversity of sex partners, male or female, you get both. A woman can mix genetics with a socially successful sugar daddy, and also mix her genetics with a physically successful poolboy on the fly, then support both off the sugar daddy's resources, those two traits are genetically adaptive to her, even though they may not be socially acceptable.
Why do you think female sexual virginity is so highly prized? Religiously so? It's the only way to know for certain that the offspring she bears are your own genetic progeny. If females didn't have the urge for diverse mates, why do the majority of your sperm cells not bother fertilizing the egg, but rather stay behind and form barriers to block the sperm of some later sexual partner? |
