They added Baby Donkey Kong as a baby, but when you duck and tongue it instead just does a shoulder rush. It's powerful sure (as if you needed it since you can just eat almost everything in the game) but it just slips you up into trying to eat things and instead you shoulder rush and destroy them. However, baby DK is required because he's the only baby that lets you climb vines or ropes.
I only just realized this, but they got rid of the items system. In Yoshi's Island, you used to be able to carry a big ass inventory of items that you could collect through the minigames and various other shit, such as the watermelon that let you fire a machine gun of seeds. Also, those +10 or +20 star things were extremely helpful for doing the 100% clears on levels. They don't have this. Trying to get 100% in Yoshi's Island on the SNES was totally justifiable and even fun, because a lot of the levels were really cool and creative on their own, each one having their own individual whateverses, and you could explore them at your own pace, and it was just a matter of finding all of the coins and flowers. In the shitty fucked up incorrectly made DS version, you not only have to find the coins and flowers, but now you have to find the stars, because only so many show up. Also, Baby Peach and Baby DK throw eggs in such a way that they CANNOT REFLECT OFF WALLS, they just break on contact with anything. Peach's eggs just break, while DK's eggs explode, supposedly they're more powerful (who fucking cares).
Half of the levels in Yoshi's Island DS are those auto scroll ones where it scrolls the level on a rail that you can't do shit about. It makes it even gayer to bother collecting the red coins or anything, because you have to play through once to learn their locations, then replay the levels. In a game this half assed and not all that fun or creative, it's not worth it. So you can't even explore at your own pace and have fun running around a level searching for shit, because the level scrolls at a set pace and there's no exploration, only rote memorization of very VERY VERY generic level design.
It uses the dual screens, but most of the time it's completely unnecessary, the top screen just shows a bunch of nothing. They fuck this up countless ways. First, there's a dead space in between the top and bottom, so in between both screens there's shit there that you just can't see, when really there should be no dead space, as soon as you reach the top of the bottom screen, it should show you up at the bottom of the top screen. Instead you just disappear. And there are usually platforms and shit in the dead space that the game is expecting you to jump onto, while the level FUCKING AUTOSCROLLS UPWARDS, and if you don't jump around the invisible spots you fall to the bottom and die.
At the same time, the game is really just too fucking easy. I'm like 3 worlds in, and I have 80 extra lives. I've only died twice. Mostly because they kept in the minigames from Yoshi's Island 1, but had no clue what to do with them except make them give you extra lives instead of the awesome items the previous correct fun game did.
I'm going to play through the entire game because of course that is what I do, it is like my job to report (who's going to do it, YOU? I thought not 8( psh), plus I can't go to the bathroom anymore without starting the DS, so I have to play something, and I already finished a lot of the good roms. There are a few parts of Yoshi's Island DS that are quaint or fun, usually with you exploring or running around. But too much of the time, the puzzles are just very simplistic "here's a thing you need to do to get through here" combined with "here's the place you need to get through," really simple shit. I remember Yoshi's Island was kind of simple too but it involved some experimenting (sexually NO WAIT) and yiffing anthro taurens. Yes.
PS: The bosses are mostly embarrasingly stupid and easy. The boss of world 1 isn't even a fight. It's just a giant thing covered in circles, which you can just lick off and turn into eggs, and then you could shoot the eggs at the other ones, but literally not a single one is out of reach. I finished the fight in about 20 seconds without ever being hit because the guy doesn't really move, he just jumps up and down. Tell me how much you fuckin suck hell yeah you fuckin suck you and your band you fuckin suck hell yeah we fuckin suck I don't give a fuckin fuck fuck you you fuckin suck etc. Get down there and suck my buddy's. COCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |
