Yes, that was roughly my experience with both Kohan and Total War, except that in Kohan I would periodically be pulling out damaged companies and sending them back to heal, and building new companies and sending them into the mess, and if things went very badly I'd order the whole army to rout. Those actions don't make much use of the finer levels of control offered by the game, but they're enough to keep me in control and keep me having fun. I mean until I get tired of fighting the AI (which I did).
