My father got me Persona 4 for Christmas. Actually he got it for my brother. He got me a despair.com plaque reading "just because you're necessary doesn't mean you're important." He got The WS a copy of the Leonard Nimoy fat girls' picture book ("there's more of them to love," dad explained.)
BUT! I've been playing Persona 4 anyway. It is the following games:
* JRPG Grindathon
* Dating sim
* Pokemons
* Princess Maker
* (not at all hidden cutscene x-button-pressing minigame, comprises 80% of the game)
all bound together in such a way that each part motivates you to play the other parts. A lot of games would do this by leading you to their various components with the promise of lewt and skills, but P4 drives you from segment to segment out of boredom. AND: it takes place in the same high school and town that Katamari Damacy was filmed in.
The most interesting part about the game is the difficulty curve in the grindathon: you hit the level of grindan ROI dropoff (in which the available monsters don't provide enough lewt or xp to make killing them worth your time) much earlier on in the process of levelling to beat a particular boss. This forces you to get creative with your pokemons to compensate for your relatively low level vs. the boss (which in turn encourages you to be a better dating sim player, since that influences the power leval of your pokemons.) It's strategical, consequently I count it as good game design.
The worst part of the game is that it is dominated by cutscenes and they can't be skipped. |
