A fetch quest worse than anything in SS2, even the easter egg hunt.
Remember when you had to chase down 3 red ninja bots? They'd run down a corridor and eventually stop.
Here in Bioshock you have to hunt down all sorts of items without being told where they are, including ones held by teleporting guys who'll disappear to another part of the level if they spot you. Oh yeah and there's ragdolls, so GOD HELP YOU if some blast sends their corpse into an inaccessible spot. All this so the totally fucked city doesn't run out of oxygen.
Would you say you mostly liked the game? I loved it, but it was mainly because of the combat options I had with the plasmids and such. The story was nice, but it was for a video game, so the scale is different. I also have not played more than an hour or two of System Shock 2, so I was not able to recognize the shitty things they may have carried over. But I am curious as to your overall impressions, or things that drove you crazy.

System Shock 2's atmosphere had me terrified for the first hour or two before all the bullshit gameplay started getting to me. Even then the audio logs were still a highlight.
Bioshock's atmosphere was creepy up until the first hook slicer...5 minutes into the game. The build up to the first Big Daddy fight was kind of tense, the drill daddy an intense fight, but then they scrap the drill for all those boring rivet gun ones. The single Ayn Rand joke isn't nearly that clever to be stretched out over 10 hours.
I had to put it down for an entire month. Whenever I mulled picking it up again, I remembered that I was on the "find 5 chlorophyll vials and 10 water flasks" quest and loaded something else up instead. The audio logs kept me going through SS2. In Bioshock all I have to look forward to is more "unrestrained capitalism is bad" jokes and cribbed Fallout humor.
I just got to the crazy artist guy, which seems a tad more interesting. I'll probably finish it some day. |
