When I was a freshman and sophomore in college, I did a comic strip for The Daily Orange. Years later, another DO alumnus, Robb Armstrong, would create and sell the comic strip Jump Strip, which was nationally syndicated. That's right, I wasn't even the best at being a guy named Robb making comics for the fucking Daily Orange.
Above is the best comic I ever did, and it still has numerous problems. I'd like to state that I did this in 1992, when I was around 18. I didn't have a scanner, and I did it all by hand. On that note:
1) Yes, the handwritten letters are abysmal.
2) Having the professor be "Professor Badman" was great for my friends (as there was an actual Professor Badman) but it totally distracts from anyone reading the comic.
3) "Wegmans" is a local grocery store, local to western New York. If you're from anywhere else, it is likely that you aren't familiar with them, which further distracts from the joke.
4) Clearly, I Bloom Countyed my "drawing" "style."
On one occasion, I accidentally cribbed a joke wholesale from Bloom County. I felt like an asshole, as it wasn't even a particularly good one that I ripped off. Doing that (and being told that years later by a friend) really turned me off to the entire comic-making experience. I can handle not consciously ripping off someone else's work, but not even knowing? That sucked.
