They just use Paypal's stuff, there's no DRM on anything.
What happens is: you buy the game. You download it, it works, it's all good. You can grab the latest patch and everything. (The project is finished and will never be updated again.)
However, in the process of purchasing it, you have to use an option through Paypal that signs you up for a yearly subscription. You may ask, "what am I subscribing to?" You are subscribing to the ability to re-download the game and assets at any time.
It wasn't always this way: when I originally purchased the game, right after release, none of this was mentioned. I just realized I couldn't find the install executable. I went to grab it again from their site, and found that my login was dead. That's when I learned how bad the new purchasing process was.
