They don't, really. There are three arcade machines set up in the castle the game takes place in. You use tokens randomly scattered around to play them. You win prizes for high scores (or lucky results from the random number generator in the case of the mini RPG.)

Also the shmup is not a gradius clone. "Gradius Syndrome" refers to games that have a really long powerup sequence that drop you back to square one if you die. Essentially the player is screwed from that point on because they're stuck in an insanely difficult part of the game and no longer have the firepower or maneuverability to deal with it.

If you're jonesing for some Gradius, go nuts.
