Then my hard drive died. :( It is indeed pretty impressive how dudes can pump out little games like this just for the sake of jokes, as if making a game were no harder than writing a forum post. And some of them are surprisingly well made. But still, they generally fail, as far as I can see--not so much because the technology is weak or polish is missing (making a game actually is pretty hard) as because the humor is weak. A lot of these games either sacrifice themselves to the nerd-humor ideal of clunky self-awareness, or straightforwardly translate the commercial games they are "demaking" into 2D. Sexy Seaside Beachball and Little Girl in Underland are among the funniest ones, but they aren't more than slightly fun as games, and even they frequently refer to how funny and jokey they are being, in case the player is too stupid to notice. Offslaught '81, Artifact's House Globe, and one of the Katamari ones (the one with the Lovecraft theme) were my favorites among the straight translations, but none of those adds anything significant to the idea it's copying other than the novelty of a 2D demake, so they're all basically pointless. Of the games I tried, only two did not fail in any of these ways. One was The Interweb, which is so simple that it can't help but get its joke right. The other one is S.T.A.C.K.E.R., a fun game and a strong, well-presented joke, neatly integrated. S.T.A.C.K.E.R. justifies all the other games I played from this set. |
