I had another question but then I decided not to ask it by Bananadine 11/17/2008, 8:59pm PST
While struggling to do a bit of direct text manipulation in my slowly accreting Inform 7 game, I was amazed to find that periodically altering a few characters in several sentence-long strings, and replacing the original strings with the altered ones, was enough to drag the interpreter down completely and ultimately destroy it. A text game interpreter, slowing and choking and throwing out-of-memory exceptions because I was... manipulating text!

Task Manager reported that the interpreter was confining itself to just a couple of megabytes in memory--presumably far more than enough to store my few sentences, but whatever, I poked around in the documentation for the memory-setting commands, cranked up the limit by a factor of ten or so--and it still crashed. So I cranked it way up again, to something like 100 MB which was about as much memory as I could get it to take (with higher limits it wouldn't even compile!), and still it would fill all that memory with my few little strings and crash--and on top of that, the daunting availability of one hundred scary megabytes caused it to run like mud from the very beginning, before it even started altering any strings!

The Inform documentation suggests that you're not really supposed to need anything more than 512 K for normal purposes, and if you do you're KIND OF a weirdo and maybe you should consider being nicer to all your thousands of potential fans who won't want to play your game unless it runs on a several-year-old cellphone. Well okay it's much more friendly and professional than that, it's great documentation really. But still I get the impression that these people would consider it very special and possibly even inappropriate for a text adventure to allow itself more than a thousandth of the power of a modern computer. So instead of asking the interactive fiction newsgroup how they can stand being punished for making anything big, I just hacked around my problem and moved on. :(
