The capper to my summer internship at the DA's office this summer was watching the sentencing of a child molester who legally changed his name to "Ziggy Stardust." His angle was working as a music teacher and volunteering with churches as a choir director. He went for high school girls in his band and choirs, many of which I'm sure were around 16 or older at the time. In fact, his main way of getting them alone was hiring them as babysitters (Yes he did have a wife and kids and was outwardly a fine upstanding, if a little eccentric, suburban citizen).
His victims took the stand and testified. All of them had a few years, if not decades, to get over it. He didn't go as far as penetrating all of the victims, one victim he merely dry-humped before calling it off, not unlike the event that triggered Kevin Spacey's enlightenment in American Beauty. But strangely, none of these victims said, "Gee, I was kinda weirded out, but I'm fine. Tee Hee! More importantly, were you spiritually fulfilled by the experience, Ziggy?" In fact they seemed pretty uniformly upset. Even saying that just being a pressured into making out with middle-aged authority figure (with no dicking involved) was something that scarred them to this day. Can you believe it?
I've gotta admit, it was pretty amusing hearing him address the judge before sentence was passed. He tried manipulating the judge using his usual techniques! Speaking in a sing-songy voice, he said he made a mistake but was sure God has forgiven him and everyone involved. It was pretty hilarious in a horrible kind of way when he listed all the good charitable activities he'd done over the years, even though he used all of them as opportunities to get his hands on children (like mentioning his selfless work in central america, even though the court had previously learned that the priest down there said Ziggy was no longer welcome there due to an undescribed event involving "Maria.")
Unfortunately for Ziggy Stardust, the judge was not a 16 year-old girl. In fact, the judge said that the more and more Ziggy talked, the higher and higher his sentence went. Ziggy will die in prison.
I wouldn't think that you need a QB-style reality check on this, Jerry, but painting me as Caltrops' resident prude because I disapprove of middle-aged men molesting underaged high school girls reflects badly on you. |
