I'm a fan of the concept behind Milton Bradley's gamemaster series. I liked Axis & Allies for the first couple plays until the sameness of every setup and the fact that each player is assigned a "role" (Russia just holds out, Germany just attacks them, Britain and America just do nothing but build an invasion fleet in the north sea) made me give it up. I absolutely love Shogun because each setup is totally random like Risk, each player starts on equal terms, and there are a lot more interesting things to do with money. Where the hell is the PC adaptation of this already? Fuck Axis & Allies.
Now I'm looking into buying a copy of Fortress America on ebay. How is it compared to the above two games? The concept is interesting (it will be a house rule that the U.S. player must play while having an American flag wrapped around him at all times), but it looks like it might suffer from the sameness of setup that Axis & Allies does, plus combat and economics look as simplistic as A&A.
Verdict?
Holy shit it's been a long time since I played that, but my feelings for it are mostly positive from a few (say, half a dozen) plays maybe, what, fifteen years ago? For reference, I've played Axis and Allies and Shogun each about three times (on alternate Tuesdays I was allowed out of the salt mines).
The American player takes it in the ass at first -- it's alternately satisfying and/or horrifying to see how far the invaders can penetrate at first, before the American lasers and patriot systems come online. Plus I thought the pieces were cool and I think I made "vrooming" noises while playing with the cool ass hover tanks while reading Hammer's Slammers novels.

Here's my contribution to getting the site up and running again. It's not well fettled or calibrated yet, but perhaps someone could find a use for this.
