SR2 fixes every one of my complaints about the first. by Lizard_King 10/18/2008, 10:30pm PDT
They also improved the quality of the writing somewhat and added in a coop mode that is probably the best I've seen in a sandbox game. The customizability and upgradeability of damned near everything makes it a very addictive game, and unlike GTA4 it has a philosophy built around gameplay rewards for doing things well. It has the occasional hiccup, dated graphics, and every now and then makes the cardinal error of making partner AI a key factor in mission failure. But the generous checkpoint system makes that manageable, and the game hasn't cheated with unreasonable unkillable moments for enemies. It also has very few "fuck you in a cutscene with a situation you could handle in game with your eyes closed" that I've noticed.

-You get a small reward at the 3rd level of an activity, a larger version at the sixth and final. The activities include impersonating police and brutalizing criminals, old favorites like ho-collecting and drug distribution escort missions (remember you can switch cars at any time), and helicopter gunship killing sprees. And zombie survival games. All modified for coop play like Mercs 2, but with the bonus that you both get to keep the rewards.

-You not only get a fairly useful disposable number of homies, you get the opportunity to uniform them, upgrade them, and decide what they drive. Every safehouse is moderately customizable as well, and your character creator/subsequent plastic surgery is about as flexible as you could ask for. In short, the Barbie dress up aspects are in full effect, with (of course) the in game bonus that more "style" gives you of making unlocking new missions via activities even easier.

-Coop takes the same "play in another person's game approach" that Crackdown and Mercenaries 2 were so successful with, and adds a really seamless way for you to play their missions without wasting your time. Yesterday, I was cooping with a person who'd focused on an entirely different story branch than the one I had done. I was able to play his high level missions, and when I go back to my game I only have the other missions in that branch left to do (earlier or later). I get the rewards, and I have the option to play them over or skip the actual mission when they come up sequentially, as well as skipping the cutscenes out of order and watching them later if I am so inclined (not likely).

-The combat is based around you crushing your enemies. There's still plenty of room for death, but it's got some of that Mercs 2 vibe of dominating the enemy without the absurd lengths that game had to go to in order to create a challenge (I still don't like placing markers for bombing runs and then trying to outrun the airstrike).

-Multiplayer is ok. I doubt it will have legs beyond a few months, but the game style where you switch modes every few minutes from different activity types played adversarially is pretty fun.

It manages to integrate the lowest common denominator satire of videogame activities with substantial gameplay, something No More Heroes promised but didn't deliver on. And I'll take a less capably designed plot/aesthetic any day instead of Clover's moderately good title if the trade off comes with as much player friendly design as SR2, as much as I want to contribute to the "guys who made Killer 7 and Godhand" fund.
