Whoa, caveat: this is the last place anyone should discuss music. Moving on: indie/emo WTF.
I get metal. I don't mean I like it, because I'm too estrogen-raddled to like most of it, but I get it. What I don't get are all these "sublime", "muted", "complex", "haunted" indiepop "masterpieces", the product of youth size large t-shirt blowouts at Goodwill shlepped onto four-piece bands of shuffling, downtrodden, spiritlessly Caucasian bands. They keep popping up at Oink. They have their own category and the list of band names is like all the band names that ever get adopted accidentally by shuffly sarcastic forum readers. "A Silver Mt. Zion" - that's the one that got shrugged out of Godspeed You Black Emperor. Or the eighty or so Songs: Ohia albums (I downloaded them all, impressed with the murky quality of the reviews posted, they sound not unpleasantly like Jeff Buckley and Nick Cave's kid doing demo tapes.) I mean I don't get what's going on with modern post-alternative/post-rock pop-not-pop.
I demand cogent histories of Western pop music between the years 1980-2004, attention to be paid to "mainstream" and "underground" movements, trends in commercialization and anti-commercialization, Where The Politics Lives, the shifts of genres, and the transfer of musical information between nigger and cracker musical cultures. |
