Freespace 2 is what Wing Commander dreamed of being before it turned into fading porn queens and has-been actors on bluescreen miming lines crafted by wannabe directors. Freespace and Freespace 2 are the current champs of space sim shootem-ups because of their concentration on making cool missions instead of posing in front of a garage ladder and an old prop from Star Trek, because of their command-for-everything-you-wanna-do nature (target target's target, anyone?), because of their dependable sturdiness during play (I read Bug of the Day religiously when the games were under development), because there were reasons to choose between various different guns and missiles and not an absolutely ``best'' set, because it is absolutely the first game that to me that captured the sense of scale of fighters battling in and among capital ships, of the amazing power of capital ships with their ferocious beam weaponry and flak cannons, and of creating a campaign that had some genuine tension and twists and turns and "woh" moments (if you've played the second game, you know what I'm talking about), and I played all the Wing Commanders including Prophecy, and I played both Privateers (hey Clive, 'sup), and I played all the Star Wars games (Tie Fighter is the only competition, but it loses because of the Tie Defender), and I played the horrific StarLancer, and the amazing but in a slightly different genre Independence War, and the rather sucky but haven't played it much but the opening video wasn't as good as the first yet Independence War 2, and the Homeworlds just because they were set in space and I was dying (the first one was pretty good). I know my space sims. And this paragraph has 4 sentences.
And there was multiplayer! and an amazing missions editor in Fred (which was not too hard to use and provided hours of entertainment all on it's own)! And puppies and candy for everyone!
And apparently nobody bought it but me, so my shiny CDs of the games and the mission packs will allow me to retire to a villa with a harem of nubile young women! Fuck all yall.
Bitter.
P.S. Especially *you*, Veronica.
