He probably didn't think anything of it at the time, but the Svengali and I once played a game which amounted to - on my end - idiotic babbling about any artist or band I could possibly find while still suspecting nobody had ever heard of it/them/him/her/etc. On his end, he would name a superior article. The discussion continued for a few weeks. One of the last rounds was:

Zseni: Terje Rypdal
Svengali: John Martin

A non-sequitur, but really at that point what else was there. The Svengali and I wound up agreeing on next to nothing, musically, but I do still like John Martin. That game was the last time I ever took personal direction from anyone on music. Now I don't like anything until I find it myself first. Thankfully music blogs arise to fill the void: I can take a blog's advice! Because the blog never rubs it in or sings in the car awkwardly or otherwise insists on introducing a human element to my headphones autism. It's safe.
