The Humans have somehow found invisible webways to travel along and travel the fastest of all races when going along those paths, but have no FTL when travelling anywhere these lines aren't, so fingers crossed the RNG doesn't fuck you over by having your home planet unconnected from everywhere! Also no refueling whilst in the network, so you better be able to make it one jump!
The lizardmonkeyguys are just old school Star Trek warp ship, they just go really fuckan' fast and that's how they go faster than light!
The bugs have no FTL drives for their basic ships, but they have have special ships which are warpgates to any other gateship that has been deployed and their home planet. This is pretty slow and annoying for the bug player, but when a bug fleet turns up you better destroy every single one of his gateships or next turn you have got the best his fleet has to offer getting teleported in a single turn to your planet. It's not fun fighting off a ton of terrible early game ships only to find out next turn that he has in face been upgrading his ships and now has the toughest and largest ships in the game coming at you.
The dolphins have the coolest one, because it's the only one that effects them in combat too. They teleport like the bugs, but thousands of times a second over tiny distances. In terms of travelling this means when they are near a planet (at the start and end of the journey and maybe in the middle if your path is crazy) they travel slower, but over open space they make huge jumps per turn that get them places fast. In combat this means fighting them in deep space is a nono because the ships are a lot faster and more manouverable than your ships because they have no intertia and can turn on sixpence and don't get rocked so easily by certain weapons. Near planets though they're sluggish, still the fastest ships in the game, but a lot easier to hit. On top of that because they're teleporting all the time there's a tech that upgrades it so sometimes your weapons will just miss! It's cool though, their ships are made of toilet paper and a solid hit with pretty much anything with destroy them and the shotgun-style turrets will blast them across map if they have a damaged engine.
I dunno about the expansion races, weaselmonkeys use the nodelines like humans and I dunno about the birds because they're like 2 days old, but they're probably kind of broken like the weasels were.
Also this is like my first 4X game and I am terrible at it, could this be down to game or am I just terrible at 4X?! |
