It's pretty decent, but follows SS2's fucking annoying "1 step forward, 2 steps back" progression. 2 hours into the game and I'm still trying to fulfill the very first objective of "get to Neptune Bay". Every time I get close YET ANOTHER door is blown up or turns out to be locked and Mr. Shrugged tells me I have to find an alternate route (it even follows "go to medical and get the key from the doctor" steps).
Some things SS2 did better:
- Overall atmosphere
There's something creepier about a haunted spaceship with parasite infected zombie crewman than there is about drug addict Limey extras from Condemned wandering around a leaky building.
- Audio logs
Ayn Rand's philosophy would collapse if taken to its logical conclusion. I GET IT. SS2's logs and PA announcements built up dread by laying out the takeover timeline. Bioshock just hammers home the same cartoon megalomania joke over and over. Infected doctor luring in female crew members for checkups to rip out their womb and replace it with cyborg parts was creepy, a plastic surgeon getting bored and rearranging noses isn't.
I'm sure lots of people are crying over no more RPG leveling. Good, fuck them. |
