The puzzles are all the actual NYT puzzles from 2003-2006. You can pick one at random or play through in order. Playing a full week unlocks bonus jumbo puzzles. The puzzles are graded by how much time it takes you to solve them, and while you can get hints (the game will fill in a letter for you) that penalizes your time. Thankfully you can just turn off the grading altogether and take your time. You can input letters by writing them in or tapping a little onscreen keyboard for when you are playing the game while riding a mechanical bull.
Pros:
* The puzzles escalate in difficulty throughout the week, and the Fri/Sat/Sun puzzles are very very difficult. Finishing one feels like an accomplishment.
* You can cheat your way through the Fri/Sat/Sun if they are too hard.
* The music and SFX are soothing. This is a good game to play at bedtime.
* The screen has three different zoom levels so you can zoom out and see the whole puzzle on-screen like a human being would.
Cons:
* If you've already been doing the puzzles in the paper for the past few years there's nothing new here.
* Multiple questions about hit shows Ally McBeal, The WB's Reba.
* Paying $30 for a DS crossword collection instead of just buying one from the checkout line for $0.99.
In conclusion, there are zero surprises to be found and that's okay if you like crosswords. Positive. |
