Aside from them having redone the whole game but with polygons, they actually made gameplay changes.
First, Rydia gets a summon that works like the aeons or whatever in FF10, where it replaces Rydia. It's called Whyt and it's a little tiny cartoonish guy who is all white, and you can redraw his face if you want. When he's summoned he replaces Rydia and then randomly does a bunch of shit, sometimes randomly using skills from other party members. At this point in the game I don't think it will help at all, because it costs 50 mp to summon him and Rydia only has about 60 or 80 or whatever. You can also play a weird math mini game (you get four numbers and have to add subtract multiply or divide them to end with 10) which can add some bonus stats to Whyt. I think there will be more minigames coming up after I get Rydia back.
A few characters gave me key items that are consumable, the first one is "auto potion" and once you give it to a party member and equip it in their abilities menu it'll make them use a potion any time anyone takes damage. This is pretty worthless, but one that isn't worthless is "auto counter," which lets someone automatically counter attack when they're hit. Now that looks cool.
You can actually remove some of the other abilities. For Rydia and Tellah I removed their "attack" ability and replaced it with using their rod or staff as an item in combat. Not only can you do this, but they added an auto combat option, so you hit X and it just has your guys auto battle, BUT you can pick what ability they'll auto battle with, so you can have your casters auto cast a spell (you only get to pick one thing), or just use the staff, while your fighters just auto fight, or you can have Yang kick every round.
There's a sort of in joke with Namingway, since he can't rename your character anymore (what with Cecil's name being pronounced out loud in the occasional cutscenes), he keeps changing his job and name. First he's Mappingway and he gives you a special map, and once you map out a cave or dungeon 100% (which is pretty easy aside from the occasional tiny missed corner) it pretty much spits out a bunch of items into your inventory, like a few free potions or an ether. Later Mappingway changes names and jobs a couple more times, adding a beastiary option and some other shit I don't even remember at this point. Oh yeah he lets you rewatch previous cutscenes, ones that have voices (Mist being burned down, or Anna's death scene).
Nostalgia factor is pretty huge here, and it seems they've added a lot of variety for people who've played the previous game and want a little more than just a remake. Even some of the bosses are harder because they have a lot of counter attacks now.
Jso and I are currently playing the shit out of it. So I have to finish this game, Drakkan(!!), Super Mario Gay, and No More Heroes. |
