The lamp is actually hiding there in all the scenes by the director, sometimes placed where you have to be actively looking for it to find it, so that's not on John. I think it was placed it on the Crystal Castles game in my case, although my Evil Otto-shaped dome may very well be blocking it. I can't bust on John, I still love him - I would have made almost exactly the same decisions he has made in his life if I were him, with the possible exception that I would have given Tom Hall's people the water, technology and nutrients they needed to save their world.
