Seriously, this film is funny as hell.
Oh, it has the obligatory dharke/shot with silver filters to make everything look metallic trickery and plenty of depressing scenes (and, IMO, few too horrible ones), certainly. Christian Bale's emaciated frame is positively ghastly, and the film makes no bones (har har) about showing it in its ghastly glory. Anyway, it does far better than its B-movie casting would suggest (Jennifer Jason Leigh, Michael Ironside, and nobody also star).
But, really, the film becomes goddamn hilarious about halfway through, as Bale's Reznorik plummets into madness. Or...does he? Anyway, I love watching actors chew scenery and scream and flail and do hilarious things to themselves in the throes of paranoid psychosis and whatnot.
Creepiness: 7/10 (mostly first half)
Humor: 8/10 (mostly second half) |
