I'm not sure what the installer does or doesn't do, but here's a quick SCP primer. The installer may have done most of these steps for you already.

1) Always open the game through the Launcher exe.
2) Under the "welcome" tab, browse for the SCP exe. It should be plainly labeled.

The installer does prompt these. There are a ton of exe's, it tells you which one to look for and then preselects it anyway.

3) Under the "Video" tab set up your graphics. SCP runs better under OpenGL. Also check the "Use large textures" box.
4) The "features" tab turns on SCP's enhancements. Pick an Easy Setup, or go down the list checking boxes. I do not recommend 3D radar or apply lighting to missiles.
5) You can also manually enter Custom flags. -ambient_factor 75 makes the lighting more realistic, -fov 0.39 gives a more realistic field of view and makes cap ships look as big as they're supposed to be.

Thanks - are any of the features something I want? I'm at the default which is "nothing selected." I did put in the -fov 0.39, I'll see what that does.

6) Finally, go to the MOD tab and select the folder "Media VPs" to play the default Freespace 2 campaign witht the improved graphics and models. The other mods should be set up to automatically reference the MediaVPs.

Looks like the installer did that on its own.

(And don't forget to set up your joystick and turn off the robot voices as needed).

The MS voice module got turned off as soon as I heard how annoying it is. Is the ship captain Robert Loggia?! It's certainly a lot better than the Fitter, Happier guy that reads the menus (until you turn it off).

Any tips on joystick buttons? It auto-selected a bunch of them. The only thing I changed so far was putting the throttle on the Z-axis throttle slider on the joystick.

The main thing I seem to want to toggle on and off is the auto-target and auto-match-speed, plus maybe going double cannons? I'm not sure my unfrozen caveman brain can cope with using all 11 buttons on a joystick.

Have fun!

Thanks, and thanks for the tips! The installer really does a lot of the work for you. I think literally the only thing I had to do was create a folder (Games\FreeSpace2) so it could install everything right, and it wouldn't let me proceed until I did.

So far it looks pretty awesome. I've just done the training missions, tomorrow I will blow up some bad guys.
