it won't threaten your sexuality like the Shanghai Alice games,
Oh no no no, my sexuality is unthreatenable. I think what this really was about is that, as you mention, the heroes are basically just points in these games--and that the enemies are also just points, even the bosses. It doesn't make much sense to have different, separately destructible, significantly spaced-apart pieces of little anime girls shooting different kinds of bullets at you, whereas this does make sense with robots. And I like having that, so I like robots. I also like seeing the configuration of these shooty things change at dramatic points during big setpiece-type battles, and that as well works much better with robots. Points don't do these things. Basically the games you like because of their purity are just too pure for me! They feel like empty exercises. I'm trying to say it better than "You just don't get it unless you get it" or "it's subjective maaan it all comes down to taste" but I guess that's where I've stopped!
As for the memory ones, I think there is at least a difference between the unpredictable trap hallway in Gradius and the various surprises you might encounter on a first playthrough of Ikaruga--as I recall, in Ikaruga you can generally get through a new threat if you react fast enough, and the barrier is only that hardly anyone can be expected to react that fast to that many unique, unfamiliar threats, consecutively. I imagine that there is a kind of person, maybe one in a million, who really can get through such a game on a first playthrough. And for that person, that playthrough is probably among the best experiences anybody can have. This would be an extreme version of how I have played Dance Dance Revolution--if I'm not just barely managing to sight-read something unfamiliar, then I'm probably not enjoying myself! While other people enjoy memorization and mechanical perfection, for whatever reason. |
