My hometown had one movie theater. There was one man who went to every movie by himself and wasn't married or employed. Everyone in town knew him by name and he was a pariah. So I am self-conscious about going to movies by myself. I also worry about remaining interested enough to stay until the end and get my ticket's worth, without the conformative pressure provided by at least one other person.
STILL AND ALL, I made an exception today for "Married Life", and glad I did because it made me grateful for my lack of attachments.
Chris Cooper doesn't play a conspiracist or religious hypocrite or ruthless hatchetman. He is more like a horny Willy Loman. Pierce Brosnan plays a flirtatious Bob Newhart, and Rachel McAdams plays Betty Cooper (of Archie comics, no relation to actor Chris) all grown up.
The only other people at the movies on a Friday afternoon are affluent couples who retired early and are still young enough to enjoy a movie. They all enjoyed this one and laughed at the same parts I did. So we are not so different after all, the attached and I. |
