Realistic games are scary and dangerous because that's how real combat is.

Real combat sucks, try to avoid it. The more like Equilibrium your game is, the more fun you'll have: deadly munchkin good guys; angry, useless bad guys; thin, stupid plots; short, violent fights and the occasional "I'm The Highest Ranking Cleric of the Tetragrammiton!" line so you can taunt the person about it endlessly.

That said, I can't see any rational argument for 2nd edition over 3rd edition except maybe that you're just used to it and don't want to change. It's not easier, it's not more realistic, it's not more balanced, and it's not even remotely as flexible.

If you have been playing 2nd continuously until now, keep playing it. It's a bitch because between 2 and 3.5 they changed two or three key words in every single rule, so the better you remember 2nd Ed, the tougher 3.5 is. Also stay far, far away from the 3.5 RPGA modules. I can not stress this highly enough. Each one is 4 hours of slow torture followed by doing your taxes.

On the other hand, 3.5 has some advantages. 1st: Eberron. New campaign world, uses all the 3.5 stuff, it's the first game book I've bought in a while that I read and said 'that was actually worth $40.' 2nd: Forgotten Realms is still cheesy and encyclopaedic, yet somehow more reasonable to play. 3rd: If you like the dungeon crawls and maps with little minis of your fey blade dancing around spellsinging and such, but don't like the rules lawyering, the fucking 3.5 books have all the rules. The 'oh that rule was 2nd ed, not third' really is the biggest hurdle. You can not play this game without maps anymore, so if you want roleplaying, it's back to Legend of the Five Rings for you. Maybe Earthdawn or (the really, really obscenely fun) but weirdly serious sword and sorcery game Exalted.

You could also back into 3.5 using the new Star Wars rules. They aren't as great as the d6 West End version, I guess, but they're so close to 3.5 you can learn the rules by playing KOTOR. A lot. More.
