It is a clear, soft, tender evening in late March. Though the hard gunbeats of war echo from over the Alps, here in Zurich there is only the giddy peace of spring in this, anno domine 1916, which for all Jerry Whorebach could see would be the year of flowers. He gathered rich satiny masses of them, his slender arms overflowing with blossoms of every description from every florist he could find. A stranger in this city, his heart nevertheless beat a Swiss clockwork pulse for only one reason.... him.
Back at the hotel, FABIO showered.
Hot Swiss mineral water drawn from aquifiers of perilous purity deep beneath the alpine crust poured over his body. Yet not even the purest water - indeed nothing short of holy water- would ever cleanse the filth that lurked inside him. As he scrubbed, suds rilling over his tight, muscled abdomen, a scent of lavender rising from his person like inspiration, he wished for the hundred-thousandth time that he did not share his immortality with a love that could never die.
When he'd first locked eyes - like emeralds pouring into an ocean - with Jerry, he had been instantly captivated with the young blond patissiere at the Rue de Regrettable cafe. Of course, tender "Serge" was a heartbreaker. Like nature's first green, golden Serge appeared too delectable to provide any lasting interest. Learning that he was really named Jerry Whorebach, and that he was an orphan, was shocking enough. But learning that he was truly good was a shock far worse. And then the greatest shock of all was when FABIO fell in love with him, a shock like a frost shock, but one that also froze Jerry's heart with ecstacy.
It was this heart that FABIO craved. His warmth, his outgoing compassion, his delight in all good things - this was the heart capable of redeeming a monster. So FABIO hoped. But between then and now, he could never for an instant forget that this very same heart was full of rich, sweet, potent blood. Blood he itched to consume.
FABIO hoped, not for the first time, that Faggot Hunter BDR wouldn't be able to find them in Zurich. Hunted for centuries for his creature of the nightism, FABIO was shocked like an earth shock to discover that he would also be hunted for loving Jerry. BDR had plagued them across three continents, but who would ever think to look for a faggot in Switzerland? Surely their scent would be lost here among the spring blooms.
In the darkest of nights, at the whitest of throats, FABIO wondered if this single-minded crusade, this harpy quest against him that BDR had undertaken, might not be because, perish the thought, may the words never cross his lips, a thousand devils forfend him from even dreaming it, but could it possibly be, perhaps, not with a certainty but certainly not uncertain that BDR had once, maybe, in a greener spring, though there was no greener spring than this, FABIO thought, loved Jerry Whorebach?
In the distance, a clock tower struck the seventeenth hour. |
