Q1 2005 - Unrelated - every cybercafe in USA goes out of business, due to awful business model. Not related to Steam/Valve.

We had a cybercafe/LAN gaming center at a local mall here that went out of business after a few months. Just recently a new shop opened up in its place, another cybercafe/LAN gaming center. Somebody sure did their homework. I'm just wondering how they talked the bank into that loan.

When I worked at Activision (HAHA I'82 LOOZER), they threw a "premiere" event for the release of Quake 2. It was held out in this community in the Inland Empire called Azusa, in a cybercafe in a shopping mall. John Carmack and Anna Kang were there, as well as assorted second-tier TV actors (the principal from Saved By The Bell, the dad from Fresh Prince of Bel Air), and a bunch of idiotic game devels from Activision. I couldn't figure out the TV actors, until I was introduced to the owner of the cybercafe, Mr. Larry "Jon" "of" "CHiPs" Wilcox. I asked him how he got into the cybercafe business, and I think it went something like he was in to games.

The unspoken subtext of my question was, "Is there a club for ex-TV series actors? Or do they all just naturally gravitate to cybercafe openings?"

Anyway, I'm sure they're out of business now, but that was the strangest non-Hollywood event I've ever been to.
