The main thing that could be a make or break for you is how much the game depends on random chance. You can be screwed by a bad opening hand, your giant battlemech can do a 10-die attack against an adorable puppy with a defense of 2 and miss. And if you luck out and get a saboteur hero (and find the enemy base) before the enemy gets an intelligence center built, you can win a game in less than 10 turns (this is one of the reasons I advise always playing at least 3 on 3.)
I also have a few minor gripes with the interface, find the whole "use your spare APs to create empty armies" mechanic odd, and think the game sucks on a high resource/starting tile point map. However, I'd say this is the best 4X game I've ever played. You are constantly faced with difficult either/or choices on which to spend limited resources, the AI is competent and very lifelike, and the AP system is a brilliant solution to the late game micromanagement mess that plagues the genre. |
