"Good work cracking that In the Cut case, Detective Whorebach. How'd you know the killer wasn't the cop with the three of spades tattoo on his wrist, but was in fact his partner who for some reason had the exact same tattoo?"
"Easy, Chief. I first noticed that the partner always wore a shirt. That immediately struck me as suspicious. When he emerged as the only suspect without a motive, or really any connection at all to the victims or locations or circumstances? That was the final clue."
"I see. Just one more question. What made you so sure the killer wasn't that obviously insane stalker guy, the one who always wears a red hat?"
"Red hat, Chief? Or red herring?"
