I'm proposing a Chinese William The Conqueror precisely because they do Peasant Command And Control way better than we do.
The Normans didn't end feudalism; they, in cuddly proximity to the Crusades, ended the Dark Ages. Fast on William's heels was the 11c Renaissance, and, after that, the slow and fabulous emergence of mercantilism, the middle class, and the Magna Carta. But there were always guys in charge. |
