Q: Are women over age 35 at increased risk of having a baby with a birth defect?

A: Women over age 35 are at increased risk of having a child with certain birth defects involving chromosomes (the structures in cells that contain genes). Down syndrome is the most common chromosomal birth defect. Affected children have varying degrees of mental retardation and physical birth defects.

* At age 25, a woman has about a 1-in-1,250 chance of having a baby with Down syndrome.
* At age 30, a 1-in-1,000 chance.
* At age 35, a 1-in-400 chance.
* At age 40, a 1-in-100 chance.
* At 45, a 1-in-30 chance.
* At 49, a 1-in-10 chance (1, 4).

A 30 year old woman that stops the fucking drama already and gets down to business is less than half as likely to have a baby with the Downs compared to a woman that thinks she's such hot shit that she can afford to wait for some dream guy that's probably already married to a woman that isn't a psycho.

The woman that decides that men just aren't worth the trouble >:( and gets a sperm donor at age 40 is ten times as likely to give their child Downs. And make no mistake: the eggs and sperm don't have the birth defects built-in. These babies would have been normal if their mothers had been either A: less picky or B: more desirable.

Way to kick it up a notch, FoK! Of course in the article we're talking about features a woman who had a baby without bothering with a father, and now she's edging towards 40 and thinkin' about wedlock.

My issue with this article isn't so much that women are dumb whores as it is that this dumb whore who wrote it has the most nightmarish view of gender politics ever created. This in turn suggests why some women in their 30s and 40s are totally unbearable. Tewt's endearingly self-effacing turn as Just Some Schmoe plays into this UHG GOD BOYS THEY ARE SO GROSS mentality: he's cheerfully stepping up to the plate as Mr. Settled-For, but the fact of the matter is that he's a good guy with a lot to offer his wife, just like his wife is a great woman with a lot to offer him.

The article criminalizes such a relationship by announcing it as "settling." Nobody's "settling", you stupid cunt. People don't deserve their imaginary ideal mates any more than they deserve to make as much money as they think they should or be as good at DDR as they imagine they are. People work to get the best deal they can for themselves in a relationship. They do all the bullshit they have to do at work to get a raise. They practice playing all the trax on super-slow with arrows reversed and bombs and all dat shit in order to be the dancing queen.

The Atlantic is a right-leaning publication with some of the cheesiest opinion columnists around. Lori Gottlieb continues their proud conservative tradition of self-reliance by... blaming other people for market conditions and failing to identify and capitalize on opportunity.

That's why I hate this article so much: because rather than just deal with the fact that she, Lori Gottlieb, made a lot of stupid, shallow, self-righteous decisions before she got old, she passes the buck to all women everywhere, affirms that true love is a myth yet all women will desperately need a man at some point, and characterizes life post-35 as a nightmare hole forced upon the many delicate flowers of womanhood. And guess what she hasn't done: settled. That's right, she just can't bring herself to share in the miserable fate she's imposed upon her readers.

Fucking typical right-wing opinion column touting the usual sloppy, punitive, hypocritical sentimentality - life in small towns is so much more authentic and real, but I'm not living in one. All women need to marry, and do it early and to any idiot that will have you, but eh it's just not my scene. Nothing is more noble than work and poverty is just mismanagement, thus I (a magazine columnist) know that the working poor are just bad at managing themselves, so they deserve their poverty. Abortion is wrong because those are precious and real human lives carelessly destroyed, and if we don't invade Iran we might lose even more babies.
