As a spectator, the awesomest songs are the ones where the drummer rocks out and the guitarist is banging his head and the singer ends up jumping up and down and suddenly three non-musicians playing a video game are actually a rock band in your living room. Watching my family play the OkGo song is probably the most fun I've had playing video games in a group setting ever, and I was just watching.
"Message In A Bottle" is fun to sing, it has a great guitar part and it has a great drum part. It would be really fun to play or to watch.
By contrast "Perfect Drug" is my favorite NIN song ever but if Rock Band were to accurately emulate it that would consist of my family going into the studio, sampling themselves over and over, cutting the samples up into something no human could ever play, and emerging from the studio three months later with a finished track. A good performance has no relationship with that song. |
