Rare monsters are not only rare spawns but when they spot you they often disappear or immediately run away and eventually disappear, and if you do engage them they always get the first turn, during which they usually escape. This makes doing a quest where you specifically need to kill one pointless. You won’t get the drop without the quest accepted, and actively seeking them out is just an exercise in frustration.

Until I got the hang of it, equipping a bow was crucial to catching these things as that little boost in range helps a lot. Remember, their awareness is just a souped up version of the regular monsters, meaning you want to approach relatively slowly from behind, preferably directly behind and not at an angle.

Once you have them, it is crucial to make sure that everyone in your party has a different kind of attack, at least covering the three (pierce/bash/slash). The monster will be weak to one of those and insta killed in the first round 99/100 times (unless the one with the right weapon misses), reducing his odds of running away once you've caught him.

The rewards are sort of worth it. They give you really fruity versions of each kind of weapon that have 99 accuracy/100 damage, which is handy (you guessed it) for killing more golden mobs or going after enemies with critical weaknesses to certain types of attack. The toy bow was useful to me for a long time as a regular combat weapon as well, far outstripping the early level weapons.

At the stage I got stuck at (late january in game time, just because a ton of new games distracted me and I was pissed at not being able to close the deal with the last two chicks), there were only a few of Elizabeth's quests left. I think the hardest was one of those damn "find x number of shadow shards" that I couldn't get forever, apart from the special fusions which suck a dick. It's really easy to take some of those generic collecting/level bracket missions too early for you to be able to do them, and if you time it right you can get most of them done in the course of regular play.
