When it says musical on Google Movies, it's not an allusion or a hearkening back: this is a movie where people sing the dialogue. I don't like Tim Burton but movie day in January is the very definition of slim pickings. We saw it on the strength of the cast (strong) and it worked out OK. By adding horror to the musical genre, I find I can laugh at it and feel just dirty instead of gay.
Two hours, however, of musical storytelling is like 500 pages of comic book. They put the weak material up front and recap it later (maybe an homage to the humble origins of theater, when audiences were common people with no watches and good reason to show up late); be sure to show up 30 minutes late. |
