What's the deal with furniture stores? by Jerry Whorebach 12/23/2007, 3:25am PST
Managing a furniture store must be the most stressful job in the world. They always seem to be going out of business. We have one in town here that's been going out of business around this time each year for the past decade. Part of the problem definitely stems from the owners constantly making terrible business decisions, like buying so much stock they are OVERSTOCKED and have to start liquidating AT COST or BELOW COST. I mean that's just bad planning.

I can't imagine trying to get a business loan to start a furniture store. The loan officer would be poking holes in your business plan left and right. "It says here you plan to buy fifteen times as much stock as you could possibly sell, including all the stock from three other furniture stores that are going out of business as we speak." But I guess they teach you how to think on your feet at furniture store college. "Excellent question. Tell me, are you familiar with the concept of an INSANE 48 HOUR MADNESS SALE?" Only in the furniture world is insane madness a valid solution to your business problems.

But furniture store owners don't look like they even care. Everytime I see one on TV, it's like they only have one concern in mind: not being undersold. They're overstocked, going out of business, in liquidation, fire damaged and failing in every conceivable way, and all they care about is making sure NO ONE is taking a bigger loss on each sale than they are. Don't they realize, thinking like that is what got them in this mess to begin with? It's like the entire industry is one big joke, and the punchline is hundreds of breathless fat men in crowded warehouses across the country pleading on local television for someone to come save them from their hilariously retarded mistakes.
