After being unable to string together long 1/8 notes (hi-hat lines or the strumming in the chorus of Hand That Feeds), I thought Rock Band was extra stringent about the timing, and I was extra rusty. Then I five-starred Hand That Feeds on the office standard def TV. Failure to five-star in one TV change? My Sony Bravia is the blame! I had set the TV calibration to "LCD TV" and thought my job was done. However, the state of HD is so awful, I needed to baby the calibration through trial and error. I found the perfect setting to be 20ms of adjustment in the "A/V sync" menu, and leaving the lag at zero. I'm disturbed that my A and V are 20ms out of sync on all my other games, but at least now I'm getting five stars all over the place in Rock Band.
TEST SYSTEM SPECS:
- Xbox 360 Elite
- HDMI
- Sony Bravia 46V3000
Since my positive diagnosis I discovered two more problems with this setup that I didn't notice at the time of writing: mic lag and drum fill lag. Drum fills are an acceptable casuality in the war to make the rest perfect, but mic lag is a deal breaker. Harmonix acknowledges this problem (although it's not really their fault) and so between the lawsuit-level anger on their forums I read about some workarounds straight from a Harmonix employee, two of which worked for me.
1) Don't use HDMIWHAT! Sure enough, using component instantly made the mic more responsive over the HDMI. Oddly I still needed the 20ms of sync adjustment, which surprised me. I 5-starred my entire first tier of drums on expert to confirm. Only "Sun El" from my friends list, whoever that is, holds a higher score for Wanted Dead or Alive. He's not doing expert though. Bad lag during the drum fills still exists.
2) Run the audio straight to the stereo, not to the TV.INCONVENIENT! This works amazing, though. I re-adjusted the sync down to 10ms, and now the drum fills seem nearly perfectly synced.
SummaryEveryone involved with HD: FIRED. |
