HL2 lets you have your flashlight on while your gun is out. It just dies in 30 seconds of continuous use. Usually, that's okay, but it made Ravenholm a lot more annoying. HL2's Alternate Flashlight Time/Space Continuum is technically bareyl better than DOom3's, but HL2's gameplay was designed better.
It also recharges very fast. This was never an issue for me, except on those occasions when I tried swimming with it on. Your breather/flashlight/sprinting power draw from the same 9-volt. Oh well.
In the airboat, I could turn the light on while I was driving. In the buggy I couldn't. Is this a bug?

HL2 has a gravity gun and cool alien assault rifle with over-and-under magic laser-ball thingy. What the hell is that, anyway? Which thing? And hey, iD just announced a Doom3 expansion that has - WOW NEETO - a gravity gun. Sad.
The alternate fire for the alien assault gun is ball lightning or some shit. It's fun watching it bounce around killing stuff.

HL2 has an airboat. Doom 3 sucks so I didn't play it very long, but I don't think it had an airboat. Or a buggy. Or a crane you can use to drop cargo containers on badguys (totally a gimmick, but who cares). The first airboat sequence felt too long, but whatever, it was still fun. I like how the game was designed to force you to use the vehicle instead of letting you do what I did on On a Rail, which was creep forward and kill everything first, then ride the goddamn cart. Of coure, the means were a little hamhanded. Hmm, how to get them to progress with the airboat? GIANT INDESTRUCTIBLE ROCKET TANK? BINGO. Aw, just make all the water radioactive. I found a pretty good cache of ammo (like running out is ever a concern) in a corner before the second-to-last turn before the dam.
Those are totally destructable! Later in the game. That early, all the 9mm ammo in the world wouldn't do it. But I did blow some of those up late in the Water Hazard episode. I get a warm happy feeling just remembering it.

HL2 is an continuation of the plot of the original game. It is?
Remember how Barney recognized you at the beginning? And how people keep referring to Black Mesa? That all happened in the last game! They aren't really expecting you to just roll with the weirdness, it was all explained (kinda) in the first installment.

Half-Life 2 kicks ass and Doom 3 sucks cock. In all fairness, I installed and was playing Doom3 inside of 20 minutes. It took me seven hours until I could play HL2. But, I'd rather wait for a great game than jump right into a clunker.
So who's complaining? |
