About 4 screens into the game, 2 hours later. One hour spent watching cutscenes and (YES!) hearing McPhilosophy over the Codec. One hour spent jacking up the same first few guards in the many, many wonderful ways available in this game. So far, the viscerally appealing throat slash is a favourite, although there is much to be said for knocking a man to the ground and holding him at gunpoint, while he shakes out various items from the prone when shots suggestively land between his legs. Also, kung fu fighting through four or five guards at once, who actually take cover, regroup, etc. Fire at your head if you hold someone hostage, the whole deal. Also, it took me a good five minutes of committing suicide and reloading to figure out how to easily kill a crocodile. What can I say, the whole attack from the prone thing was not that intuitive....
It really nails down that whole fuck it and keep going element that made chronicles of riddick passable, you can recover from any mistake with a little creativity and effort, thus discouraging perfectionism and encouraging you to mix a little running and gunning with stealth.
Thus far, I hate to admit that it is kind of fun. Enough to make me split my time 90/10 with Shin Megami Tensei until I beat it, I think. FABIO, if you play this, just start skipping the moment Big Boss comes up on the radio. You'll thank me later. |
