Any tips? I did ok with the Medic and not so terrible with the Heavy and the Demoman, but absolutely awfully with everything else, especially the scout, like, 13 seconds of life awful.
I've done poorly, to the point where people have wondered if those doing worse than me are mentally handicapped in some way, Vectrex enthusiasts and/or household pets. Here's my plan to get better:
- I'm going to go to some servers with a low ping that don't have anyone on them and just run around the maps, trying to learn their layout. The low ping ensures that if people see 1/24 and join up (thus making a game out of it) that I won't be fighting the Internet at the same time I fight the other team.
- Get the basics down on the heavy, spy and soldier class. It might just be me, but I am finding teams with seven engineers and a demoman, and then ending up on those teams. The soldier lets you throw carnage from a distance. Also, try to memorize where the health is and don't feel bad running away from a skirmish to eat more health. Doctors seem to instinctively not waste their time on new players, leaning more towards the kinds of guys who have physically grafted their Fragbox into their chests. Let the people who have been playing TF since it was a Pong mod do the dirty work of getting briefcases and controlling new checkpoints.
- Clans run servers and they all like to play together. If you're getting your head caved in, remember that there are thousands of servers out there. I don't believe in logging off as soon as the tide turns, but it's pointless to spend 45 minutes on a server where the four best guys are on one team and you're working with people who chose a gamepad over a Steam avatar. Playing with people better than you is good, but to a point: my little brother was a really good high school football player, because he played with kids four years older than him growing up. That's helpful. If he had been thrown out there with the 85 Bears he would have been killed.
- Don't feel any shame jumping onto the obviously better team as you're learning the game. Most of these losers have been meditating on it for over a month, so it's not that they are all better than you, they've just been playing longer. (Most of them are genuinely better than me, not you.) More, if you don't have me listed as a Steam Friend (c), please do so and always feel free to join a game I'm in. If you pick the opposite team you know that there's one guy you'll always be able to rocket in the face. My strategy against Ray last week was to knock him out of the game by overflowing the byte tracking his kills.
- Read the other posts in this thread and listen to them, because to be honest, me trying to give someone advice on TF2 is like every other person in the world trying to give me advice on how to moderate a forum.
I look forward to seeing you in game, Ethan!
