Supreme Commander is a very bad game. by laudablepuss 08/26/2007, 12:44am PDT
You all told me this, but learning is for FAGS so I bought it. The game itself is just fairly bad, but the interface nightmare that you have to go through to get to the goddam game is just unbelievable.

Step 1: install the game.
Step 2: patch the game. I was already familiar with the fact that THQ can't program games, so I downloaded the patch and ran it, instead of trying to get the game to do it for me.
Step 3: try to start a lan game. HAHA GOOD LUCK, SUCKER. A lan game is possible with one other person, I think. If you have 4 people who want to connect, it can't be done. My brother in Atlanta connected, and that was fine. My brother sitting next to me connected, and I was informed that I don't have a connection to him, nor he to me. Same when my friend, also sitting next to me, connected. NETWORK PROGRAMMING R HARD, HUH THQ? Gee, maybe you guys should find a book or something to help you.
Step 4: Give up on the lan thing and try their awful GPGnet service. This requires a patch.
Step 5: another patch!
Step 6 through 16 or 17: PATCHES! Each one requires you to restart the GPGnet thing. Takes an hour or more. During this patching process, GPGnet will only remember the first three letters of your password, so you have to keep typing that in too.
Step 18: Holy shit you're now connected to GPGnet! Click to join a game.
Step 19: ANOTHER FUCKING PATCH!
Step 20: Now you're in the stupid game. God help you wade through the ridiculousness. I'll leave aside the gameplay aspects and just mention that if you decide to quit a game (like, say, you don't have 10 hours for the grindfest), you don't get any game stats. That's pretty fucking gay.

It was actually slightly more difficult even than that because THQ doesn't know how Vista works. They are hardly alone there, so I don't blame them (much) for that. So for me, GPGnet crashed a couple times, I had to activate UAC, and nothing was put into my start menu. Par for the course.

Supreme Commander is still better than Empire Earth 2, but since that's the worst rts game ever made, that's not really saying anything. In other news, I enjoy pain. >:(
