Anyone wishing to take a poke at me, well, this will just about do it. Aside from the whole Saw & Incredibles fiasco, I got exactly ZERO VALUE out of the retail release of Half-Life II.
I don't even know why I did it. For the physical media, I guess. But that was rewarded with no manual and no jewel case. Has Sierra been doing this with all their releases? This is fucking inexcuseable... if this is Trophy Bass IV or something, then yeah, who gives a shit. But they've got a competitor in Gabe Valve whether they know it or not, and Valve isn't able to dish out a printed manual or a jewel case. Which didn't motivate Sierra/Vivendi/whatever at all.
No reason to get the thing at the store. You don't anything physical except the actual discs themselves, it's $5 more expensive plus any applicable sales tax, you might have to deal with the nonsense that EB is forcing on people with their first-day sale policies and you will realize that you're giving money to these worthless fuckers at Vivendi as opposed to eliminating them. (Admittedly, for all I know, Vivendi gets a cut of Steam purchases.)
November 16th, 2004. The business model for computer games HAS CHANGED. I will never pick a Vivendi retail release over Steam again, ever. Especially since the DVD version was nowhere to be found, and I now have to lug four or five (whatever it is) CDs around with me for the rest of my days and not lose my serial number which is affixed to the shitty paper sleeve.
I fucked up. I hope the rest of you who weren't quite certain if this Internet sale thing was going to work can learn from my error. www.steampowered.com
