Here's something I've never understood: why is yards allowed the most used defensive stat? I'd think points allowed would make more sense, but I'm sure there's some weird tradition or fact I'm overlooking. The implication is that low yardage allowances imply low points, stalled drives and so forth. Plus, the offense and only the offense can get offensive yards (the only yards calculated in Yards Allowed); special teams and defense can all score points along with the offense, which can easily skew the results. Last Sunday, your Colts' offense only scored 35 points, but all 400+ yards are the offense's alone. Still, stats-happy football games will still toss up Points Allowed stats for a good defense. IIRC, the reason the Superbowl-winning Ravens' D got so much press was they had the lowest points allowed average ever.

A more pressing question: Does ESPN's Sunday Night crew actually go to the game? Every shot of them has some weird blue screen, CG background behind them. Scandal! |
