"As she lifts her arms up her breasts rise and flatten," says Valve's Ken Birdwell. He's showing off one of the character models for Alyx Vance, the female lead in Half-Life 2. Birdwell, who once wrote software to create custom shoe insoles, was the man tasked with making more-believable characters for Half-Life 2--characters who could express emotions through their faces and have full musculatures, as evidenced by the breast demonstration.

This is like the 60's sitcoms where the man and wife sleep in twin beds. Is anyone going to acknowledge the disparity here? Does Ken just not care, is he gay? Did he choose the breasts demonstration at random? How can you get away with trying to look completely normal saying "As she lifts her arms up her breasts rise and flatten." I mean, come on, how do you do research this sort of thing, besides staring at flattening and rising human breasts for hours and hours, comparing breasts, judging breasts, making small cosmetic changes to breasts, making clay molds of breasts, scanning breasts into a 3D scanner, attaching ping pong reflectors to breasts and recording the reflectors' movements off of the breasts, and so on. So how does a man deal with all these breasts, day in and day out, for as long as it takes to get it right?

I guess he just goes to work like the rest of us, ogles breasts for most of the day, and goes home. Somehow in his spare time between staring at female models' breasts and assembling a 3D musculature human breast models, he builds a breast movement demo (really just sort of tosses one together). He promptly forgets this demo. When he sees the professional gaming journalist come by, he is glad to talk about his work, and somehow, in the course of trying to explain the musculature structure of each character, a thought pops into his head. That demo! So he shows the demo, and clinically explains how the muscles (which just happen to be female breasts) rise and flatten.

It could have all happened this way. But in my mind, Ken follows his statement with "You think that's hot, there's three more hours of footage where this came from!"
