I guess a 5-4 record puts them out of the playoff hunt?

From what I've seen, Warner hasn't been the lynchpin in the Giants' losses, but maybe Coughlin likes being unemployed?

Fiedler and Brunell also got the hook, but Warner's is easily the most quizzical. Bill Parcells is a rat bastard and he was overly-insulting during his press conference when asked about potentially yanking Testaverde, but he said it all: putting in a guy with limited pro experience is a sign to the team that the season is a wash. Did Warner play horribly Sunday? Yeah. Would he have played significantly less horrible if the perennially-suspect line had played better? Of course. Will Manning explode Ben Roethlisberger-style and carry the Giants into the playoffs (again, behind that line)? No, not even his older brother could engineer a winning season as a rookie and remember, Peyton went all through camp as the starter. Eli didn't, and I don't think Coughlin gave him much extra time to prepare him as one. Sunday will mark the first time Coughlin has ever started a rookie QB on purpose (perhaps at all). At this point, I'm guessing Coughlin is gambling that Manning may be smart enough to protect the ball better. Beats me how, since pro defenses are way faster than college. I think it's too early to pull Warner, mainly because it's too late to put Manning in.

On the other hand, the Colts that Peyton inherited were awful. Worse than the Giants currently are, I think.
No, they weren't. They had a good line, Marshall Faulk and Marvin Harrison. Their defense was creaky, but not much more so than a Strahan-less New York unit.

And who knows? If Eli wins his first game, maybe the team will rally around him.
"Who knows" and "maybe" are tough phrases to hang your season on. Evidently, Coughlin had been evaluating Warner over the last 4 games, and was unhappy with all of them. Not specifically and only Warner though, but you're right, we've seen QBs go in and spark a team.
