Just played through it. It's a nice departure from a lot of the recent single player map packs for HL2, because it's fun and well designed. I had doubts, even looking at the pretty nicely designed website, because someone can make a good website and have a shitty mod. But this was not the case here. 
Really good mapping. These guys could probably end up doing real vidya game work. There is a little new voice acting, the first guy who finds you (and tells you that your name is Jamal) is a new voice, and it is not bad at all. Although that first guy will keep handing you 17 SMG bullets every 20 seconds and say "Jamal here, ammo" and stuff. It's like WHEN IS THIS GUY GONNA STOP GIVIN ME AMMO? It turns out the answer is when you are full of ammo. Most of the map pack (which is about 2 hours long) is inside a big jail, apparently Nova Prospekt. The only thing missing is setting up friendly turrets, but that's okay because they have all the other shit, friendly NPCs, friendly antlions, lots o combine, an antlion boss fight, hoverjets and strider fights, and then a couple adventures outside which look nice and refreshing also. The friendly NPC moments are kind of limited. You get a few at the beginning and then you're separated (in kind of a nice little scripted sequence), and a bunch of the middle is you alone or with some antlions. The last portion is you teaming up with another dude in a courtyard area. Then you get to a boat with Chris Rock and escape. 
(Actually it is just a randomized NPC, I noticed after accidentally falling into the water and being torn apart by leeches.) Cons: Steam automatically downloads the Source SDK because it's required to run this mod (this is minor, PSH). Bugs: The pulse rifle's thing on the side is kind of messed up, it goes inside the orangy part when idle. 
Overall: Really good. |
