Balance-wise, it would seem that the addition of an air /&/ ground unit would encourage the other player to stop relying on one kekekekekey tactic, which is something I've heard anectdotally or personally witnessed you complaining about like only a million billion times.
Aside from never complaining about single unit spamming in Starcraft, I'm not sure how an "all in one" unit counts as moving away from that.
INDEED. Even the unit information page basically admits it: "Full-scale raids by viking squadrons can inflict devastating damage and are very problematic to counter. In order to defeat vikings, the enemy needs to bring a strong ground and air force to bear."
YUO ARE RAEPD. I guess the goliath unit is gone now? Or is there still a use for an anti-air ground vehicle? Also: guess what about the assault marines I MEAN REAPERS:
"For tougher targets, reapers are often equipped with the dangerously unstable deuterium-eight demolition device, or D-8 charges, as they are commonly known. These can be thrown a short distance and will detonate after an equally short delay."
BETTER NOT CALL THEM MELTA BOMBS, WHAT OTHER MADE UP NAME CAN WE CALL THIS RIPOFF FROM WH40K?
Then there is the ghost unit. Looks promising, altho as a sniper in SC1 they sucked monkey fuck because one detector could get them instakilled while they plinked away with the c-10 canister thing which did maybe the exact same damage as the marine weapon. The fanart and still unreleased Starcraft Ghost game hints at the idea of all female hot ass pieces of poon secret agents, but the actual unit model just looks like a guy in bright white with a large backpack. At least the SC2 unit preview page thingy seems to promise a far superior ghost design.
And I'd say it resembles the Veritech as much as anything from W40k.
That's not the dreadnaught look a like I was talking about. Look closely at the marine screenshots.
That is (I think) the combined SCV attack unit. Also on the marine unit page: DROP PODS.
Let's face it, DOW and COH are superior in every way to starcraft2 already. I will still buy it to play singleplayer, but my days of endless amounts of turret/tower defense custom maps over the battle.net will never come again. :(
The one good thing that warcraft 3 brought to the table is the battle.net interface that even 5 years later is still the best online matchmaker for pretty much any game ever. You can easily automatch for any number of players, veto one map so you don't get stuck playing the worst map while at the same time you don't get matched with people who memorize and stick with only one map all the time OH MY GOD I LOVE THE MAP DUST. You can automatch with a friend against other arranged teams. You can pretty much automatch any combination and be playing a game within 30 seconds and can even keep the game minimized and do other stuff and it'll automatically maximize when a match is found. The best part about the superb automatching is that you never, ever have to touch a custom map or talk to other people in a lobby to get a game going.
Meanwhile everyone else is still using gamespy and EA remains unable to program a stable browser with a limited automatch that never works and if you want to play with a friend you have to descend into lobby hell where everyone is playing the exact same unlimited money map with no rush no superweapons no air no GDI Germans Only. Forget about using a router or minimizing. FORGET IT!
Chris Metzin is the guy who comes up with most of the Warcraft "lore". He's also the guy who thought it was a good idea to make a 3 minute cutscene about a guy putting on a suit because he thought the perfect way to reintroduce the franchise was letting fans in on "the story behind the units". "How do these marines get to battlefield? We felt this would offer an interesting insight to players." |
