The place where I saw this flick was at the new Sundance Theater, the first of Robert Redford's new chain. Stepping into the theater, it was like I was back in Berkeley; $12 a ticket! The decorations were pretty underwhelming compared to the preserved depression-era Orpheum downtown.
It seemed odd to me that he'd even open one of these in Madison, let alone his first, seeing as madison already had 3 theaters specializing in indieflicks. However, none of those theaters have nearly as many screens as this one! The problem Mr. Redford hasn't seemed to grasp is that 99% of the time these movies are "indie" for a reason: They suck and no one wants to see them. They had a nifty touch-screen display that let you reserve your seat beforehand, except there were only 5 other people watching the movie at that time.
With something like 7 different screens that all need a different indie title, the coming attractions were pretty laughably awful-looking. "The Interview." Steve Buscemi (playing himself?) brings a hot blonde to his loft apartment. The blonde wants to fuck Steve Buscemi. Steve Buscemi wants to talk about the hot blonde's feelings. WILL THEY FUCK? WILL HE LEARN THE SECRET THAT DRIVES HER? THE SUSPENSE WILL THRILL YOU! Then there was a "wacky" but bad-looking comedy about wacky people breaking the ten commandments in wacky ways. You know you're in for pain when the preview for a comedy elicits only one chuckle (from what I assume is a cameo by Rob Corddry.) |
