The newer versions of gvim eliminate the gratutitous user-hostility. The necessary user hosility is still there. It's the Photoshop of text editors, see, and they don't bother making it too easy because if you aren't willing to spend a few years getting good, they know you'd be happier with some other product. (Emacs, BTW, is the GIMP of text editors and takes the other side (wrong side) of the adaptatation-vs-orthogonality debate. Don't use it.)
Unlike Word or the bevy of shareware notepad replacements, vi has been around for 30 years and won't piss all over your investment of time by changing the interface in the newest version.
